Strays Purr Too

This blog is on hold because I am so busy! But hopefully I will start posting regularly soon.

During my volunteer shift at the Maui Humane Society on Monday, a couple came into the cat building asking to see a kitten in the 5 day hold. They said they were driving on the highway and a kitten fell out of the bottom of a car. They said about 20 cars passed by before they were able to turn around and go back. They feared the worst but the kitten somehow survived the traffic! They brought him to the shelter, then rushed off to their snorkeling appointment. (Tourists, obviously!)

I found the kennel attendant and the four of us went back there to find the kitten. He was probably about five weeks old and was in a cage with another young kitten. They were so happy to see that he was okay, they really needed closure. They took a picture and chatted with us for a few minutes. They were heading back to the mainland the next day, otherwise they would have taken the kitten with them!

I'm so glad they saved the sweet thing! He'll likely enter the fostering program until he's 1.5 pounds and can be put out in the kitten playpen and get adopted.

When I brought Nanaimo to the vet for his dental, I had them do a urinalysis because he peed on me and has been spraying, which is a total shock. I got a call saying the urine was diluted and they are concerned there might be a problem with his kidneys. He's not even three years old! I am very worried.

Ming was adopted from the Maui Humane Society this past weekend! I was very happy to find this out. Right now, I have eight adoptable animals and I am praying the right families come along!

My first cat, Nanaimo, is getting a dental today. He has really bad teeth even though he's under 3 years old. They are so yellow and his breath stinks. I am really nervous because he is getting put under, and he gets really stressed out at the vets. I really hope the cleaning goes well and that he is not traumatized! Also, I am doing my first volunteer shift at the Maui Humane Society today.

I brought two of the Molokai kittens to the Humane Society last week when I went in for my volunteer interview. I brought the Siamese because he is so friendly and playful and I knew he'd get adopted fast. I also brought in BW because he is the friendliest of the feral kittens. I was hoping they would get adopted together because the Humane Society has a "2 for 1" deal until the end of July.

I was able to visit them in Family Room 1 after finishing my volunteer orientation. Ming, the Siamese, was getting lots of attention which he loves. BW was in the outside part of the enclosure sleeping in a litterbox top.

I didn't bring Shifty or Sweetie because they aren't socialized enough yet. Sweetie is getting there but I am worried about Shifty. He was trapped ten days after his siblings and is more afraid. The good news is he purrs almost immediately when I pet him and he is hiding a little less when I visit them in my bathroom.

I got a call from someone involved in spay/neuter and it turns out that the Humane Society gets A LOT more cats than I thought. That means, of course, cats get euthanized because there is not enough room. Sad, but true, which is why EVERYONE needs to get their cats fixed!

Well right now I am trying to figure out what to do. I am worried BW might not get adopted and I'm not sure I should bring in Sweetie or Shifty. I have cats coming out of my ears but I want to do what's best for each of them.

The good news is I should be getting three male strays fixed pretty soon through the Maui Feline Foundation, which costs me nothing! That's a huge relief after spending thousands the past two years on my rescue attempts.
